Alligator Causes Deadly Chain-Reaction Crash on Florida Interstate

A 20-year-old Palm Bay woman died late Sunday in a chain-reaction crash on I-95 in Brevard County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. An unidentified driver struck the woman after she was ejected from her vehicle and fled the scene.
The incident began around 11:50 p.m. Sunday when a 58-year-old man from Canada driving a 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-350 struck an alligator near mile marker 214, according to FHP reports. The driver remained at the scene uninjured.
A 20-year-old woman driving a Toyota Tacoma behind the Mercedes swerved to avoid the collision, causing her vehicle to overturn. FHP investigators noted she was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected into the center lane.
An unknown vehicle struck the woman after she landed in the roadway and then fled, troopers reported. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and the crash remains under investigation.
