Alek Minassian, convicted in deadly 2018 Toronto van attack, drops appeal
The move ends a challenge to convictions in the 2018 attack that killed 10 people and injured 16 others, court records show.
Ontario's top court confirmed today that Alek Minassian has abandoned his appeal against convictions for 10 counts of first-degree murder and 16 counts of attempted murder.
Eight years ago, Minassian deliberately drove a rented van down a crowded Toronto sidewalk, killing 10 people in a calculated quest for infamy after being radicalized online.
Superior Court Justice Anne Molloy rejected the defense's autism argument, ruling Minassian understood his actions and knew right from wrong; prosecutors characterized him as a mass killer.
Minassian received a life sentence with no parole eligibility for 25 years, plus a concurrent 20-year term for 15 counts of attempted murder following his June 2022 sentencing.
The rampage claimed the lives of Ji Hun Kim, So He Chung, Anne Marie D'Amico, Andrea Bradden, Chul Min 'Eddie' Kang, Renuka Amarasingha, Dorothy Sewell, Geraldine Brady, Munir Najjar, and Mary Elizabeth 'Betty' Forsyth.
