120 Km/h Speed Limit Trial Implemented on Section of Highway 2
The province says the 22-km test will gather driver data and could support higher limits on other divided highways.
- On Wednesday, Alberta launched a pilot project increasing the speed limit on a 22-km stretch of Highway 2 south of Leduc to 120 km/h from 110 km/h, marking the first time an Alberta highway has featured a 120 km/h posted limit.
- Economic Corridors Minister Devin Dreeshen cited a late 2025 survey showing almost 70 per cent of Albertans support higher limits on rural divided highways; the government implemented safety upgrades including improved interchanges and additional barriers.
- While Alberta has 11,000 kilometres of divided highways, officials will monitor traffic flow and safety outcomes during the trial; fines for serious offences like stunting increased by 50 per cent, with most other penalties rising by 30 per cent.
- Gord Lovegrove, a civil engineering expert with the University of British Columbia, cautioned that higher limits might create safety risks by increasing speed differentials between fastest and slowest travellers, potentially causing lane-change accidents.
- Dreeshen stated that once data collection is complete, the province will evaluate whether to expand the 120 km/h limit to all rural divided highways, with five kilometres to the north and south of the test section also undergoing monitoring.

Friday's letters: How will speed limit pilot be judged?
The province has announced that they are piloting changing speed limits on major highways from 110 km/h to 120 km/h. In my mind, that means that there will be a clear set of criteria to determine whether the increase is a good idea or not. So what are the criteria? An increase in fatalities or collisions? Drivers who push it to 130 or 140 km/h? And will the pilot project be extended into the winter months, when black ice coats the same stretch o…
120 km/h speed limit begins on QEII south of Leduc
Alberta drivers on a stretch of Alberta’s Highway 2 can now go 120 kilometres per hour. It’s part of a pilot project that launched Wednesday. A 22-kilometre portion of the QEII – south of Leduc – is seeing its speed limit increase from 110 km/h to 120 km/h in both directions. It’s the fastest posted […]
Alberta hikes speed limit to 120 km/h on Highway 2 south of Leduc
The speed limit on a 22-km stretch of Highway 2 south of Leduc was bumped up to 120 km/h on Wednesday for a pilot project in anticipation of posting higher speed signs on more divided highways. The 120 km/h section will run south of the Leduc Commercial Vehicle Inspection Station in both directions. Five kilometres to the north and to the south of the 120 km/h section will also be monitored and evaluated. Minister of Transportation and Economic …
