Alberni Valley wildland firefighters deploy to Merritt
The crew includes three firefighters and a wildland-equipped engine as Vancouver Island departments send extra resources to support BC Wildfire Service.
A wildland fire crew from the Cherry Creek Volunteer Fire Department in Port Alberni deployed to the Merritt region to assist the Wildfire Service with active fires.
Captain Wes Kovacs leads the team as engine boss, joined by Lieutenant Serena Pistotnika and firefighter Tyler Cheetham. Captain Ryan Devries described the group as an experienced crew cross-trained in structure defense, wildland, and sprinkler protection.
The Cherry Creek Fire Department will maintain current service levels in the Alberni Valley during the deployment, supported by automatic mutual aid agreements with other local fire agencies.
Other Vancouver Island departments are also responding to the wildfire situation; the Errington Fire Department sent Squad 231 to the Boston Bar Complex, while Oyster River Fire Rescue deployed a team to Kamloops.
Captain Ryan Devries, an experienced wildland firefighter with the CCFD, stated the remaining crew wishes Kovacs, Pistotnik, and Cheetham a safe deployment, noting the team will represent Cherry Creek and the Alberni Valley well.
