Airplane etiquette survey: Americans say passenger behavior is getting worse
A YouGov survey found 52% of U.S. adults blame passengers for poor behavior on flights, while 42% say etiquette has worsened.
- A new TPG survey of more than 2,500 U.S. adults found 42% believe airplane etiquette has worsened over the past five years, with most respondents pointing to fellow passengers rather than airlines as the primary source of poor behavior.
- When asked who is most responsible for poor behavior on airplanes, a majority pointed squarely at passengers themselves, while only 8% blamed airlines and their policies and another 8% blamed social media and influencers.
- Noise is most annoying; 27% of Americans say loud conversations or unmuted videos are the most frustrating in-flight behaviors, while 65% of people strongly support orderly deplaning, believing passengers should exit row by row from the front to the back.
- Debates persist regarding seat comfort, as 51% of travelers believe one should check behind before reclining, while 31% argue everyone should share armrests equally; additionally, 44% say seat-swap requests are not considered rude.
- Comfortable attire reigns supreme, as a combined 72% of people said the most appropriate clothing on a flight is simply wearing whatever is comfortable or choosing casual athletic and loungewear, such as leggings, sweatpants and T-shirts.
