Air Canada to phase out routes to these U.S. destinations in 2027

Air Canada said weak demand drove the cuts as it adds new U.S. routes and increases capacity on another service.

  • On Thursday, Air Canada announced it will eliminate five U.S. routes from its 2027 schedule, ending all direct service to South Carolina, including the Toronto-Charleston link.
  • "Air Canada regularly reviews its schedule to ensure capacity is aligned with customer demand and travel patterns," Air Canada spokesperson Sean Davidson said, citing declining cross-border travel.
  • Statistics Canada reported air trips between Canada and the United States were 18.7% lower in September compared to 2024 levels, while WestJet canceled 10 summer routes and Air Transat cut flights.
  • Air Canada plans to launch new summer 2027 services between Toronto and Louisville, Montreal and Indianapolis, and Edmonton and Newark while deploying a larger Airbus A220 on the Edmonton to San Francisco route.
  • These adjustments reflect a strategic pivot as the airline suspended its 2026 financial guidance earlier this year due to jet fuel price volatility, prioritizing profitability amid rising operational costs.
