The coordinated hijackings killed nearly 3,000 people and led to the collapse of both World Trade Center towers, officials said.
- Terror struck America on Sept. 11, 2001, when 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four Boeing jets; American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center, killing hundreds instantly.
- United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower at 9:03 a.m., confirming coordinated attack. The New York City Police Department and New York City Fire Department deployed almost 2,000 officers and hundreds of firefighters to Lower Manhattan.
- Terrorists crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon, killing 64 aboard and 125 on the ground. United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, when passengers fought hijackers, preventing an attack on the U.S. Capitol.
- The FAA ordered a nationwide shutdown of U.S. airspace, grounding more than 4,000 planes. The White House and U.S. Capitol were evacuated as both Twin Towers collapsed—the South Tower after 56 minutes and the North Tower 102 minutes after impact.
- By day's end, 2,977 victims from more than 90 countries had been killed, including 441 first responders in New York. The attacks are memorialized at the 9/11 Memorial Museum.
