A Mayo Clinic-made AI model could be a future cancer risk assessment tool

The tool analyzed records from about 39,000 patients and will be further tested as researchers look for earlier risk signals.

  • Mayo Clinic researchers presented an artificial intelligence model predicting pancreatic cancer risk at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress in Washington last month.
  • The team built an algorithm using transformer architecture similar to ChatGPT, analyzing medical records of around 6,000 Mayo Clinic pancreatic cancer patients and more than 33,000 patients without the disease.
  • Dr. Cornelius Thiels, a Mayo Clinic surgical oncologist, said known risk factors like diabetes and genetic mutations leave "a large number of patients who are going to develop pancreas cancer" unidentified.
  • Chris Varghese, the study's lead author, called it "just one piece of the puzzle for pancreas cancer," as researchers will prospectively validate predictions over the next year without clinical interventions.
  • Someday the model could integrate into electronic health records, though Thiels said researchers shared findings early to help the research community "because it's so rapidly evolving.
