A Man Fights for a New Life in Cuba After the US Expels Him in an Immigration Crackdown
De La Cruz returned to Cuba after a judge gave him 120 days to leave the United States, leaving more than 500,000 Cubans in legal limbo.
- In a Miami federal courtroom on Jan. 9, Liexer De La Cruz chose to return to Cuba rather than face deportation after spending five years in the United States. He was given 120 days to leave.
- De La Cruz had spent five years putting down roots after crossing into Texas in August 2021, seeking residency via the Cuban Adjustment Act. His status remained uncertain under the Trump administration despite his sister and niece receiving green cards.
- His three-month odyssey included walking through the Darien Gap in Colombia and Panama, a very dangerous jungle. Rejecting friends' suggestions to move to Canada or Mexico, he said, "I already missed my city so much, I couldn't take it anymore."
- Back in Las Minas, De La Cruz resumed work as a taxi driver using a solar-powered tricycle. Daily power outages lasting more than 24 hours force him to miss work charging the vehicle.
- His wife, who initially planned to stay in the United States to support him, secretly booked a flight to join him in Cuba instead. The couple now lives in Las Minas with their new dog, a 4-month-old mutt named Zeus.
