A Lesson in Kindness, Inclusion and How Kids Eat Differently
Compleat’s campaign uses Elmo and a song to help parents, teachers and classmates talk about tube feeding as a normal way children receive nourishment.
On Monday, Compleat launched the "Better Than How" campaign featuring Sesame Street's Elmo to bring awareness and representation to children and families who rely on tube feeding daily.
Limited awareness about tube feeding often leaves children feeling isolated, according to Gerard Minor, a pediatric gastroenterology specialist, as families find the practice misunderstood outside their daily experience.
Helping children understand differences early encourages kindness and inclusion, Minor said, while Teachers and classmates can normalize tube feeding as part of everyday childhood conversation rather than separation.
Parents can use everyday questions about how people eat to help children understand that nourishment varies; Some people use forks, spoons, or tubes, reinforcing that method matters less than inclusion.
They can visit WhatIsBetterThanHow to hear the song and create personalized versions, emphasizing that What matters most is every child feeling nourished, loved, and included in their community.
