IOC Confirms India, Qatar Among 7 Bidders Who Want to Host 2036 Olympics
The IOC will assess venue plans, funding and public support as it moves toward a contested 2029 vote for the 2036 Summer Games.
The International Olympic Committee published a handbook on Tuesday for potential 2036 Games hosts, identifying Germany, Hungary, India, Qatar, South Korea, South Africa, and Turkey as the seven interested National Olympic Committees.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry paused the fast-track selection process used for Brisbane when she took office in June 2025, returning to a traditional contested vote scheduled for 2029 to select the host.
India and Qatar are favored candidates in the contest involving 100 IOC Members, with all contenders assessed on technical factors including funding strategy, public support, and athlete experience.
After the Oct. 31 deadline for new interested parties, the Future Host Commission will evaluate current projects in November, and the Executive Board will approve a shortlist of candidates in March.
National Olympic Committees are simultaneously in noncommittal talks for hosting the 2040 and 2044 Summer Games, extending the Olympic Movement's strategic planning well beyond the immediate 2036 cycle.
The German Olympic application with Munich has 2036 competitors from six countries in the race for the summer games. The IOC has now named the candidates.
