Magnitude 6 earthquake strikes Panama, EMSC says
On Monday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported a magnitude 6 earthquake struck Panama at a depth of 35 km, following a series of recent seismic events across the country.
A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Friday, prompting Panama's government to declare a national state of emergency over the weekend as damage spread across central provinces.
Emergency authorities reported at least 27 people were injured and nearly 900 homes damaged, with officials warning the toll could rise as assessments continue in remote communities.
Among the most affected provinces are Los Santos, Cocle, Veraguas, and Herrera, where authorities documented significant infrastructure damage and structural instability.
Panama recorded more than 300 aftershocks following the initial quake, including one that damaged a church tower in Villa, Los Santos, as experts monitor ongoing seismic activity.
