Fish Sold in 3 States Recalled Due to Botulism Risk
The company said no illnesses have been reported and urged consumers to return all lots for a full refund.
Haifa Smoked Fish of Queens, New York, is recalling approximately 560 pounds of Cold Smoked Sprats distributed to retail stores in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania due to potential Clostridium botulinum contamination.
An October 23 FDA advisory reported that D&M Smoked Fish Inc. in Jamaica, New York, was producing the sprats without "implementing required controls" designed to prevent toxin formation.
Consumers are strongly advised not to eat the recalled products, as contaminated fish may look and smell normal; no illnesses have been reported to date.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that botulism is a rare, serious illness causing dizziness, double vision, muscle weakness, and difficulty breathing, requiring immediate medical attention.
While products primarily impacted three states, the agency noted distribution may have extended further; consumers with questions can contact Haifa Smoked Fish at 718-523-8899.
