U.N. nuclear agency to hold extraordinary meeting on Iran on March 2
The IAEA Board of Governors will assess nuclear verification, safety, and escalation risks after U.S.-Israeli strikes, at Russia’s request, involving 35 member countries.
- On Monday , the Vienna-based IAEA will hold an extraordinary session on Iran, as requested by Russia and Iran itself, following recent strikes.
- Russia requested the session, and Iran also wrote to IAEA chief Rafael Grossi seeking the meeting after the strikes, according to the IAEA's Saturday statement.
- That extraordinary meeting will precede an already scheduled session of the board, which represents 35 countries, and the IAEA said it is closely monitoring developments in West Asia.
- The IAEA stressed the 'utmost urgency' to verify Iran's nuclear material, while the United States and Israel accuse Iran of seeking nuclear weapons.
- Tehran denies military ambitions and insists on civilian nuclear rights, and the session follows U.S.-Israeli strikes Reuters said targeted Tehran's atomic programme.
