- German automaker Volkswagen unveiled the production ID. Polo subcompact electric hatchback, launching sales this month at $29,300 to compete with the Renault 5, Kia EV3, Hyundai Inster, and BYD Dolphin Surf.
- Designed as an urban vehicle, the ID. Polo features four doors and five seats with dimensions similar to the Chevrolet Bolt, while its redesigned interior replaces frustrating capacitive buttons with traditional controls for all electric windows.
- Three power outputs and two battery capacities are available; the entry-level model has a 37 kWh LFP battery with 114 hp, while upper trims feature a 52 kWh NMC battery and 208 hp motor.
- The electric drive unit uses a cell-to-pack method to minimize weight ranging from 3,457 to 3,474 pounds, while practical features include a 441-liter trunk and an optional tow hook rated for 2,645 lbs.
- Next year, the Polo GTI with 222 hp will join the range; optional equipment for current models includes a Harman Kardon sound system and massaging front seats, which Volkswagen calls a segment first.
