2026 GCSE grade boundaries revealed for AQA, OCR, Edexcel and WJEC

The minimum marks needed for each grade are now available online, helping students and schools interpret results across four major exam boards.

  • On Thursday, August 20, 2026, thousands of students are receiving their GCSE results as exam boards AQA, OCR, Edexcel, and WJEC published official grade boundaries for summer exams.
  • Grade boundaries are not fixed from year to year; exam boards determine them after marking to reflect paper difficulty, ensuring students are neither advantaged nor disadvantaged by the year they sit exams.
  • In England, GCSEs use a numerical system from 9 to 1, with 9 the highest grade, while Wales retains the traditional A-G scale. Grade 4 is a "standard pass" and grade 5 a "strong pass."
  • Anyone scoring grade 3 or below in Mathematics or English must resit those exams. Students who missed targets may contact their schools about entry requirement flexibility.
  • This results day follows thousands of sixth-form students receiving A-level results last week. Pupils completing BTEC Tech Awards and BTEC Firsts also receive results today alongside GCSE students.
