16-Year-Old Pleads Guilty to Attempted Murder After Saskatoon School Fire Attack
The 16-year-old will serve two years in intensive rehabilitative custody and one year supervised in the community after pleading guilty to attempted murder in a school arson.
- Justice Krista Zerr accepted a joint submission on Monday, imposing a youth sentence on a now 16-year-old girl who pleaded guilty in December to attempted murder.
- At lunchtime at Evan Hardy Collegiate, the offender, 14 at the time, doused the 15-year-old victim with lighter fluid and set her on fire after their friendship spiralled into obsession and threats.
- The victim suffered burns to 40 per cent of her body, required skin grafts, underwent six surgeries in the first six weeks, and spent more than 90 days in hospital.
- The joint recommendation calls for two years in intensive rehabilitative custody followed by one year of community supervision under the Intensive Rehabilitative Custody and Supervision program, and the offender has been in custody since the attack.
- The Crown changed its position after Supreme Court guidance, and Justice Krista Zerr adjourned on Feb. 26, saying, 'The practical, physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual toll of these offences is immense. The ripples are wide and still widening'.
