‘Mpox Is Making a Comeback’: Toronto Reports 14 Cases Since September
Public health says two vaccine doses offer the best protection as wastewater monitoring also continues to detect the virus.
On Monday, October 5, 2026, Toronto Public Health urged eligible residents to get vaccinated after confirming 14 new cases of mpox since September.
Infections are rising as mpox continues to circulate, with 41 confirmed cases reported so far this year, compared to 118 during the same period in 2025.
Mpox spreads most commonly through close or sexual contact, and two vaccine doses offer the best protection when administered 28 days apart.
Toronto's Medical Officer of Health Dr. Michelle Murti confirmed the city is "seeing a rise in infections" while wastewater monitoring by the Public Health Agency of Canada has "consistently detected mpox" in the city.
Gilles Charette, director of the Gay Men's Sexual Health Alliance, described the virus as a "comeback" but emphasized it remains containable with easy access to vaccines.
