1 Death Linked to Tropical Storm Lala as More than 100,000 Remain without Power in Hawaii
Hawaiian Electric said the storm downed trees and transmission towers, while officials reported one death and damage to roads, homes and communications.
Tropical Storm Lala moved past Hawaii on Sunday, leaving nearly 104,000 customers without power and causing one fatality in Naalehu after weakening from a hurricane.
Intense winds reached 140 mph atop the Mauna Kea volcano, while the Big Island's power transmission system suffered "extensive damage" from strong gusts taking down trees and utility poles.
State Representative Jeanné Kapela reported that communities in the Kau district are isolated with collapsed roads and washed out cemeteries, including the small community of Punaluu, home to about 100 households.
U.S. Senator Brian Schatz urged Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on Monday to approve emergency funding for debris removal and road repairs; public schools and county offices on the Big Island remain closed Tuesday.
Governor Josh Green vowed that recovery will be "somewhat brisk" as cleanup efforts begin, while the storm continues moving westward and is forecast to become a hurricane again by Wednesday.
