Army misses recruiting goal by 15,000 soldiers

The Army fell about 15,000 soldiers — or 25% — short of its recruitment goal this year, officials confirmed Friday, despite a frantic effort to make up the widely expected gap in a year when all the military services struggled in a tight jobs market to find young people willing and fit to enlist.

Environmental toll of Bitcoin similar to beef production, crude oil: study

New research puts the climate damage of Bitcoin on par with pollution from the beef production industry and crude oil burned as gasoline. Carbon emissions for mining a single bitcoin rose from 0.9 tons in 2016 to 113 tons in 2021, a 126-fold increase. Bitcoin mining used 75.4 terawatt hours of electricity in 2020, more than Austria (69.9) or Portugal (48.4)

Elon Musk to provide Florida with Starlink satellites in response to Hurricane Ian

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Saturday that Elon Musk and his private space company, SpaceX, are working to provide Starlink satellite coverage. The governor said SpaceX will ship approximately 120 additional Starlink units to deploy and aid in search and rescue efforts. Other communications companies responded in force, including Verizon, which deployed several autonomous drones.

Matt Gaetz Asks for Help in Florida After Voting Against Hurricane Relief

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) says he wants Congress to approve additional funds to help his state recover from Hurricane Ian. Gaetz joined 15 other Florida lawmakers in voting against a government funding measure last week that freed up $18.8 billion in federal disaster aid. At least 68 people have died from the storm as of Monday morning.

Democrats lead GOP among Latino voters by smaller margins than past elections

Roughly 54% of Latino voters would prefer to see Democrats keep control of Congress in the upcoming midterms, while 33% would like to see Republicans take control, according to a new NBC News/Telemundo poll released Sunday. While Democrats maintain a 21-point lead, this is narrower than in past elections. The same poll saw Democrats enjoying a 42-point lead in in 2012, a 34- point lead in 2018, and a 26-point leads in 2020.

A Trump lawyer refused Trump’s request to say all documents returned

Donald Trump asked one of his lawyers, Alex Canon, to tell the National Archives and Records Administration in early 2022 that Trump had returned all materials requested by the agency. Cannon declined because he was not sure the statement was true, according to people familiar with the matter. Cannon was based in New York and had been assisting with the records matter from afar, working with Archives representatives since 2021 to facilitate the return of records. As it turned out, thousands more government documents remained at Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence and private club.
