WriteSide:  New Yorker Mary Beth Keane on her Irish background, Typhoid Mary and winning over the reader by page two

Summary by Irish Independent
How would you describe your novel, The Walking People? It’s about self-discovery above all things. The main character, Greta, would have had a circumscribed life if she had stayed in Ireland. Only by leaving, which she did reluctantly — and going to New York — did she discover and push herself in a way that she would not have achieved if she stayed at home. Out of the sight of the people you know, you lose your inhibitions.
