African penguins living on the coasts of South Africa have been decimated in less than 10 years by a mass starvation, according to a new study dedicated to this critically endangered African species. Fewer than 10,000 breeding pairs of the small African penguin remain worldwide, and the species has been listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species since 2024.
