Wade Meckler homers, makes sliding catch in debut for hometown Angels
Meckler, 26, hit a first-at-bat homer and made a sliding catch as the Angels beat the Rangers 9-6.
On Friday, Wade Meckler debuted for the Los Angeles Angels, hitting a three-run homer in his first at-bat and making a sliding catch to help beat the Texas Rangers 9-6 at Angel Stadium.
Called up from Triple-A Salt Lake to replace Josh Lowe in left field, the 26-year-old Esperanza High product grew up watching his new teammate, Mike Trout, on television.
Driving a 98-mph fastball from pitcher Jacob 403 feet to right center, Meckler became the first Angels player to homer in his first at-bat since Mike Napoli did against the Tigers in 2006.
Catcher Logan Hoppe praised the energy the rookie brought to the 9-6 victory, while winning pitcher Grayson Rodriguez said the homer "put it in four-wheel drive."
Despite holding an MLB-worst 18-34 record, the Angels secured the win behind Shortstop Zack Neto, who hit two solo homers and preserved the lead with a defensive play in the seventh.
