Scottish Butcher Simon Howie Launches Bid to ‘Make Haggis Legal Again’ Ahead of World Cup
Simon Howie Butchers is petitioning to overturn the 1971 ban, saying Scottish fans will travel without access to their national dish.
Perthshire-Based Simon Howie Butchers launched a petition to legalize haggis in the USA ahead of the World Cup, seeking to restore access to the national dish for Scotland fans traveling to the tournament.
Federal food regulations have prohibited haggis in the USA since 1979 because the traditional dish contains sheep lungs, which constitute up to 15 per cent of the recipe.
Scottish broadcaster and journalist Gordon Smart is fronting the campaign, with traveling fans receiving flags emblazoned with the slogan "No haggis, no party."
The World Cup runs from June 11 through July 19 across the USA, Canada, and Mexico, marking Scotland's first tournament appearance since 1998 after six unsuccessful qualifying campaigns.
Supporters appeal to the USA to embrace the delicacy, citing long-standing Scottish-American affinity; Scottish-American comedian Craig Ferguson described haggis as "just a hotdog with a bad publicist.
