US Mint Stops Penny Production After More than 230 Years in Circulation
- At the Philadelphia Mint, officials struck the final one-cent coin on Nov. 12, 2025, after over 230 years, with Brandon Beach, Treasurer of the United States, pressing the last penny.
- Following a presidential instruction earlier this year, the U.S. Mint halted penny production after costs rose to 3.69 cents and reported an $85.3 million loss in fiscal 2024, citing financial data.
- The Mint revealed that the final pennies bear a special `Omega` mark, will be kept out of circulation and are slated for auction, while Brandon Beach highlighted the historic event.
- Deputy Treasury official Derek Theurer said `Today, we retire the penny` while Treasurer Brandon Beach emphasized `the penny remains legal tender` despite over 300 billion pennies still circulating.
- Historically, the penny evolved from Fugio cents first produced in 1787, with the official one-cent piece beginning in 1793 as large as today's quarter, while the half cent was last discontinued in 1857, Beach noted.
