US EditionUS military carries out large-scale strikes against Islamic State targets across Syria
U.S. and coalition forces struck over 35 ISIS targets in Syria, killing and capturing militants in retaliation for a December ambush that killed three Americans, CENTCOM said.
- Saturday, U.S. Central Command said U.S. and partner forces carried out large-scale strikes across Syria at around 12.30 p.m. ET as part of Operation Hawkeye Strike directed by President Donald Trump.
- Following the December 13 ambush in Palmyra, Syria, two U.S. soldiers, Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres Tovar and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, and one U.S. civilian interpreter were killed.
- A U.S. official told CNN that the operation fired over 90 precision munitions to hit more than 35 targets using over two dozen aircraft, while CENTCOM said forces killed at least seven IS members and eliminated four weapons caches.
- CENTCOM emphasized that `We will not relent,` and stated the strikes aim to root out ISIS, protect forces, with `Our message remains strong.`
- In late December, CENTCOM reported 11 missions over a 10-day period and a Dec. 19 strike that hit 70 targets, while about 1,000 U.S. troops remain and Tom Barrack met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus.

The US military command for the Middle East stated that these strikes were carried out as part of the US response to an attack that killed three Americans in December in Syria.
This new operation against the IS aimed at "neutralizing the capabilities of terrorist groups and preventing them from reorganizing", according to the US Army.
The attack was part of Operation Hawkeye Strike, which Trump authorized in response to the Palmyra attack on US and Syrian forces last December.
