US Designates Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as Terrorists
The U.S. will block assets and prohibit dealings with the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood, accusing them of mass executions and receiving support from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, officials said.
- On Monday, the State Department announced it is designating the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as a SDGT and plans to add it to the FTO list effective March 16, 2026, Rubio said.
- According to the State Department, the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood and its al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade have contributed roughly 20,000 fighters, many trained by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and fighters linked to the group conducted mass executions and used 'unrestrained violence against civilians'.
- Using Section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act and Executive Order 13224, the SDGT label blocks property and bans most dealings, while the FTO adds criminal penalties and bans material support.
- Humanitarian and relief agencies warn the designation could create regulatory ambiguity for banks and jeopardize aid transfers, while the United Arab Emirates and Rapid Support Forces welcomed the move.
- Framed as part of U.S. efforts to curb Iran's influence, the designation expands the Trump administration's crackdown amid a humanitarian crisis with 33.7 million needing aid and 13.6 million displaced.
