French Open 2026 Results: Marta Kostyuk Dedicates Win to Ukraine After Russian Strikes on Her Homeland
Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk won her opening-round French Open match against Russian-born Oksana Selekhmeteva on Sunday, hours after a Russian missile strike destroyed a building 100 metres from her parents' home in Kyiv.
Russia launched a wave of overnight strikes across Ukraine, killing four people and injuring at least 83. Kostyuk defeated Selekhmeteva 6-2, 6-3 despite the morning attack devastating her family's neighborhood.
The 23-year-old did not shake Selekhmeteva's hand, following precedent among Ukrainian players to avoid contact with Russian or Belarusian opponents. "My biggest example is the Ukrainian people," Kostyuk said during her emotional on-court interview.
Having recently secured the Madrid Open title at WTA 1000 level, Kostyuk advances to face Katie Volynets of the USA in the second round, extending her unbeaten clay-court streak to 12 matches.
The world No. 15 remains a title contender at Roland-Garros after her Rouen Open victory earlier this season. As one of the WTA Tour's form players, Kostyuk represents both athletic excellence and Ukrainian resilience amid ongoing conflict.
Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk (WTA 15th) received some scary news from her home country on Sunday morning, but fortunately it did not affect her performance in the opening round of the French Open.
