Two US Navy Ships Collide During Caribbean Refueling, 2 Injured
The collision during a complex replenishment-at-sea operation injured two sailors with minor wounds, both ships remained operational, U.S. Southern Command said.
- HM Coastguard launched a search at 1.21pm on Thursday, February 12 after reports of a man overboard from the European Highlander on the Larne–Stranraer route, but the operation was stood down shortly after 9pm with nothing found.
- A passenger reportedly fell from the P&O Ferries vessel European Highlander, and P&O Ferries confirmed an incident occurred onboard while the ship was sailing to Larne and said it is assisting authorities.
- Larne and Portmuck Coastguard Rescue Teams, RNLI Larne all-weather lifeboat , Donaghadee RNLI crew , and an HM Coastguard rescue helicopter were deployed, with the helicopter circling the area for hours.
- P&O said its priority is safety and will provide updates, warning passengers of a delay to the 20:00 service and advising them to monitor SMS and emails.
- The European Highlander operates six daily crossings taking around two hours and can carry up to 410 passengers, 375 cars and 116 commercial vehicles; marine-traffic showed the ferry and rescue boats east of East Maiden's Lighthouse.
