Two Polish airports reopen after NATO jets activated over Russian strikes on Ukraine

Poland and NATO activated jets and air defenses overnight after Russia launched over 70 missiles and 450 strike drones against Ukraine, officials said.

  • On Feb 7, Poland's Lublin airport and Rzeszow airport, southeastern Poland, reopened after Poland's army operational command ended military aviation including NATO flights near Ukraine.
  • Poland scrambled fighter jets and an early-warning aircraft overnight, and ground-based air defences and radar systems were on high alert after Russian strikes on Ukraine, Polish military said.
  • Local governors and mayors reported infrastructure hits and fires as nine injured civilians and fires occurred in Kyiv, while DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy company, said Russia had `significantly damaged` thermal power plant equipment.
  • Poland's operational command described the measures as preventative to secure airspace, noting ground-based air-defence and radar systems returned to normal, while the FAA issued a notice and FlightRadar24 reported NATO aircraft in the area.
  • Poland continues to report hybrid threats including smuggled balloons and roughly 20 Russian drone crossings into Poland last year, while a fresh round of peace talks will start later this week.
