Trump cancels US delegation’s Pakistan trip as Iran peace talks stall
Trump said the cancellation followed Iran’s refusal to meet U.S. envoys and a stalled mediation effort, after the first round also ended without agreement.
- On Saturday, President Donald Trump abruptly canceled a planned trip to Islamabad, Pakistan, for Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner to conduct indirect peace talks with Iran.
- Trump cited "too much time wasted on traveling, too much work" and internal Iranian "infighting" for the decision, after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi departed Pakistan Saturday without meeting U.S. officials.
- Within 10 minutes of canceling the trip, Trump claimed Iran submitted a proposal that "could have been better," yet rejected it, as the U.S. maintains a naval blockade on Iranian ports which Iran characterizes as "banditry and piracy" in the Strait of Hormuz.
- Araghchi signaled skepticism regarding Washington's intentions, stating, "Have yet to see if the U.S. is truly serious about diplomacy," leaving direct U.S.-Iran engagement stalled while ceasefire discussions rely on Pakistani mediation.
- While the indefinite ceasefire pauses most fighting, the economic fallout persists as energy shipments face disruption, though Trump indicated the door remains open, stating, "If they want to talk, all they have to do is call!!!".
