Tropical Cyclone Fina rips through newly refurbished luxury Kimberley lodge
Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina destroyed 3 of 18 villas and damaged others at Berkeley River Lodge during refurbishment, delaying the planned 2026 reopening, owner said.
- On Monday night, Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina struck the Berkeley River area, hitting as a category three about 9pm and all but flattening Berkeley River Lodge.
- The four-star lodge was mid-way through a large refurbishment with new interior floors, villa balcony and pool decking, and screens planned for its 18 villas along the Kimberley coast.
- Photos and owner accounts show extensive structural damage as three villas were completely destroyed, with the central lodge and staff accommodation also damaged and water and power services down.
- Importantly, the lodge's two on-site caretakers are safe and no guests were affected because the resort had closed in September, while a tropical cyclone warning remains as the Bureau of Meteorology said on Tuesday it weakened to category one.
- The owner is assessing damage while targeting a May 1 reopening, with Chris Banson saying remnants of Fina will continue bringing showers and thunderstorms through the rest of the week.
