Transporters press ahead with wheel-jam strike in Islamabad, Rawalpindi tomorrow despite administration’s appeal
Transporters demand withdrawal of Traffic Ordinance 2025 fines ranging from PKR 5,000 to 20,000, citing severe financial strain and business impact, as public transport suspends operations.
- On December 8, the Pakistan Transport United Action Committee announced a wheel-jam strike by transporters in Punjab and Rawalpindi, suspending intra-city, inter-district, and inter-provincial services.
- Raja Muhammad Riaz, Chairman, Mutahida Transport Federation of Twin Cities, said heavy fines from PKR 5,000 to PKR 20,000 had become routine and destroyed transport operators’ businesses.
- Punjab police last week issued at least 63,970 challans worth over Rs80 million, confiscated 23,904 vehicles, and met transport representatives after failed talks, officials said.
- Transport bases will remain shut, and freight operators will join Monday's strike, while Punjab Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar said police would not bow to any pressure; talks are set for 2 pm today.
- With talks having failed, officials and transporters plan another round despite appeals from City Traffic Police officer Farhan Aslam and Asad Shirazi, while traffic police agreed not to penalise vehicles with valid fitness certificates, Dawn reported.
