Tottenham Lead Chase for Key Brighton Defender with Second Bid Expected; Liverpool and Chelsea Remain Interested
Brighton value the Netherlands defender at £70 million and are seeking to keep him as they rebuild after a poor league season.
Brighton rejected Tottenham's opening bid for Dutch international defender Jan Paul van Hecke on Wednesday, with the Seagulls valuing him at £70 million.
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi is targeting three former Brighton players to rebuild his squad after narrowly avoiding relegation in 49 years. De Zerbi previously worked with Van Hecke on the south coast.
Entering the final 12 months of his contract at the Amex Stadium, Van Hecke has attracted considerable interest from Liverpool and Chelsea alongside Tottenham. Both clubs are seeking defensive reinforcements this summer.
Sporting director Jason Ayto departed Brighton by mutual consent on Wednesday, prompting a leadership restructure. Chairman Tony Bloom said: "I'd like to thank Jason for everything he has done for us."
Beyond Van Hecke, De Zerbi is exploring alternative defenders including Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, James Trafford, and John Stones to strengthen a squad that finished 17th. The recruitment drive reflects Tottenham's urgent rebuild needs.
