Japan Arrests Americans over Stunt at Baby Monkey Punch’s Zoo
Police said the men were detained after one climbed into the enclosure and a second filmed, as the zoo reported no animal injuries.
- On Sunday, police charged Americans Reid Jahnai Dayson, 24, and Neal Jabahri Duan, 27, with forcible obstruction of business after they trespassed into the Ichikawa City Zoo monkey enclosure in Chiba, Japan. Both men deny the allegations.
- Punch, a Japanese macaque, gained international fame earlier this year after clinging to a plush toy following his mother's rejection. The zoo previously implemented visitor rules to reduce stress on about 60 monkeys in the enclosure.
- Footage shows Dayson climbing the barrier in a blue costume with an oversized emoji head while Duan filmed from outside. Zoo staff quickly detained the pair before they reached the animals, with no abnormalities observed afterward.
- The Ichikawa City Zoo expanded the buffer zone around the enclosure and installed anti-intrusion netting following the incident. Authorities are considering a complete ban on photography and filming around the monkey enclosure to protect the animals.
- Takashi Yasunaga, head of the Ichikawa municipal government's zoological and botanical garden division, stated the act endangered both animal health and zookeeper safety. The incident underscores how viral attention can rapidly become a burden for the animals.
