Three Royal Navy staff dead after helicopter crashes into Devon field
Three service personnel died after the Merlin Mk4 crashed during a training exercise, and investigators are examining the cause, the Royal Navy said.
On Wednesday, a Royal Navy Merlin Mk4 helicopter crashed during a training exercise near Sourton, Devon, killing three Royal Navy personnel early in the morning.
The aircraft went down near the Okehampton battle camp on the edge of Dartmoor, a facility frequently used for training Commando Helicopter Force crews.
Emergency services, including Devon Air Ambulance and Cornwall Police, responded to the site and closed roads around the A30 and A386 to secure the area.
"Devastated by the loss of three service personnel," Defence Secretary John Healey said, while General Sir Gwyn Jenkins offered condolences to the families.
An official investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the fatal incident, as families of the deceased have been informed and requested a period of grace.
