Three Royal Navy staff dead after helicopter crashes into Devon field

Three service personnel died after the Merlin Mk4 crashed during a training exercise, and investigators are examining the cause, the Royal Navy said.

  • On Wednesday, a Royal Navy Merlin Mk4 helicopter crashed during a training exercise near Sourton, Devon, killing three Royal Navy personnel early in the morning.
  • The aircraft went down near the Okehampton battle camp on the edge of Dartmoor, a facility frequently used for training Commando Helicopter Force crews.
  • Emergency services, including Devon Air Ambulance and Cornwall Police, responded to the site and closed roads around the A30 and A386 to secure the area.
  • "Devastated by the loss of three service personnel," Defence Secretary John Healey said, while General Sir Gwyn Jenkins offered condolences to the families.
  • An official investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the fatal incident, as families of the deceased have been informed and requested a period of grace.
