Three Alberta First Nations planning to take over child welfare

Summary by Ground News
Members of the Loon River First Nation, Lubicon Lake Band and Peerless Trout First Nation voted 616 to 70 in favour of the law last month. It’s the first major step to giving them complete decision-making power over child welfare including where children are placed if they are taken from their home. In Alberta, like the rest of Canada, Indigenous children are overrepresented in the child welfare system. Alberta is on track this year to report a record-breaking number of deaths among children and youth receiving child welfare services or supports.
