University of North Texas to Offer Free Tuition for some Incoming Freshmen
The North Texas Promise will help over 3,500 eligible Texas freshmen from families earning under $100,000 avoid tuition and fees for up to four years, university officials said.
- On Wednesday, the University of North Texas announced it will cover full tuition and mandatory fees for incoming first-time, in-state freshmen from Texas families earning $100,000 or less starting in fall 2026.
- To be considered for the program, students must rank in the top 25% of their high school class or qualify for a federal Pell Grant and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by Feb. 15, 2026.
- University officials said more than 3,500 incoming freshmen could be eligible and the benefit will apply for up to four years, or eight consecutive semesters, covering roughly $6,000 per semester.
- The North Texas Promise aims to make higher education more accessible and limit student debt, with Harrison Keller, Ph.D., saying it expands access and Shannon Goodman calling it about affordability.
- Across Texas, public university systems have launched similar programs in recent years, including UT System's Promise Plus, which initially covered families earning up to $65,000, and campus programs like the University of Houston's and Texas State's relying on mixed funding.
