First of Poland's F-35 Stealth Fighters Arrive From US
The jets are the first fifth-generation fighters on NATO's eastern flank and will bolster air defenses as deliveries continue through 2030.
On Friday, the first three F-35A stealth combat aircraft arrived at the air force base in Aask, Poland, welcomed by Defence Minister WBadysBaw Kosiniak-Kamysz after flying from Fort Worth, Texas.
Poland ordered 32 F-35s from manufacturer Lockheed Martin in 2020 under the former Law and Justice government, in a deal valued at around $4.6 billion including training and logistical support.
Poland's variant is named 'Husarz,' referencing the famous Polish 'Winged Hussar' cavalry units, and these represent the first fifth-generation fighters deployed on NATO's eastern flank.
By the end of this year, 14 F-35s are expected to arrive at the base in Aask, with full operational readiness anticipated next year, reports defence news service Portal Obronny.
This procurement continues a large-scale military expansion under Prime Minister Donald Tusk, as Poland now maintains NATO's largest relative defence budget at 4.8% of GDP this year, alongside 48 FA-50 fighter orders.
The arrival of the first F-35s in Poland is a major moment that transforms the operational capabilities of the entire Polish military, said Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Minister of National Defense, on Friday. He added that it is a symbol of transatlantic cooperation, in which Poland is the "absolute leader."
