Taoiseach backs Eurovision boycott but DUP says it 'won’t make a jot of difference'
Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, and Slovenia withdrew from Eurovision 2026 to protest Israel's participation amid Gaza conflict, citing over 20,000 children killed in Gaza, broadcasters said.
- 1- Taoiseach Micheál Martin described Ireland’s withdrawal from the Eurovision Song Contest as an “act of solidarity,” following the EBU’s decision to allow Israel to participate amid the Gaza conflict. 2- At the British-Irish Council, leaders expressed differing views: Michelle O’Neill supported the move as sending a “strong message,” while Emma Little-Pengelly said it would not impact the situation in the Middle East. 3- Martin said the withdrawal also reflects solidarity with journalists and medical workers who showed bravery during the war in Gaza, noting journalists were killed in breach of international humanitarian law.
