Tesla Rolls Out Supervised Full Self-Driving in China in Wider Global Push · TechNode
Tesla said the driver-assistance feature is now available in China as domestic automakers intensify competition in the world’s largest car market.
On Thursday, Tesla announced that its "Full Self-Driving" capabilities are now available for electric vehicles sold in China, marking the automaker's first confirmation of the technology's availability in the region.
Tesla had long awaited regulatory approval for the system, which was first unveiled in the United States in 2020; as recently as April, CFO Vaibhav Taneja noted the company was still awaiting the necessary authorization.
Domestic rivals including Huawei Technologies, Xpeng, and BYD have already commercialized advanced self-driving features, placing pressure on Tesla's vision-only approach, which differs from the Lidar sensors used by most Chinese carmakers.
Tesla has not released a specific rollout timeline, and the company still requires a one-time buyout of around $9,400 for the FSD package in the region, though some drivers report the feature is not yet available.
This announcement follows a U.S. business delegation visit led by President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk to meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing, a development that could help boost sales in the region.
