Taiwan says China deploys warships in 'military operations'
China's naval operations span from the Yellow Sea to the Western Pacific during peak exercise season, raising regional security concerns, with a significant number of warships involved, Taiwan says.
- On Friday, Taiwan's presidential office said China deployed warships for operations spanning hundreds of kilometres from the Yellow Sea to the South China Sea, while Beijing neither confirmed nor denied the manoeuvres.
- On Wednesday, Taiwan's intelligence chief Tsai Ming-yen said October to December is the peak season for China's annual evaluation exercises and Beijing declined to confirm military vessel buildup.
- Taiwan's defense ministry said it was monitoring closely and had a complete grasp of the situation, while an anonymous security source described the fleet as significant; last December about 90 Chinese warships and coast guard vessels took part in vast exercises.
- Taiwan said the moves threaten the Indo-Pacific and urged China to exercise restraint, with Kuo adding `We are also confident that we can handle this matter well`.
- Jiang Bin responded to queries about a flotilla, saying navy training complies with international law and urging relevant parties not to overreact amid potential regional reach and U.S. backing for Taiwan.
