Superior, Wis. police officer shot, suspect arrested after crashing into school
A 28-year-old suspect fired at officers during a traffic stop, injuring one, then crashed into a school before surrendering after four hours, police said.
- During an early-morning traffic stop near Tower Avenue and North 37th Street, the driver, a 28-year-old man, fired at officers, struck a squad car, then crashed into Superior Middle School.
- Court records show Dylan Charles-Edward Wallace, 28, of Superior, crashed a vehicle into a snowbank near Superior Middle School after arguing with his girlfriend, then retrieved firearms and another vehicle before returning.
- The suspect later admitted to investigators that he fired an AK-47 until it wouldn't fire and acknowledged firing multiple rifles, while officers' body cameras captured the wounded officer returning fire.
- Douglas County deputies took the suspect into custody shortly after 7 a.m.; he was treated, booked into the Douglas County Jail, and faces attempted first-degree intentional homicide with $2,000,000 cash bail.
- Superior Police Chief Paul Winterscheidt said the investigation is led by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, which will review reports for the Douglas County District Attorney, and emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the community.
