UK's Starmer calls for free broadcast of Champions League final
Starmer says the final should stay free for UK supporters after TNT Sports set subscriptions from £4.99 to watch the match.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer urged TNT Sports on Saturday to broadcast next weekend's Champions League final between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain for free to UK viewers, arguing "we should be putting supporters first."
Starmer said he was "saddened" that the final is behind a paywall for the first time in the competition's 34-year history, noting it has historically been available on free-to-air television or via free online streams.
A TNT Sports spokesperson defended the pricing, noting month-long HBO Max subscriptions cost £4.99 and include coverage of all three European club finals, describing the option as "exceptional value" for fans.
Aston Villa defeated Freiburg to win the Europa League last week, while Crystal Palace faces Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final this Wednesday; TNT holds rights to all three European club finals.
The Prime Minister emphasized the request transcends team loyalties, stating the issue concerns "supporters of all teams coming together" to watch elite players compete in the biggest club competition globally.
