Starbucks Workers Across Country Kick Off Strike
Nearly 10,000 unionized Starbucks baristas strike over stalled contract talks, unfair labor practices, and low wages amid calls for a customer boycott.
- Starbucks Workers United announced on social media Thursday an open-ended strike at 65 stores across more than 40 U.S. cities, representing nearly 10,000 baristas.
- Negotiations stalled in April after almost 200 hours of bargaining and more than 30 tentative agreements, as Starbucks Workers United demands a first union contract, higher pay, adequate staffing and increased hours.
- The National Labor Relations Board has found Starbucks guilty of over 500 labor law violations, while more than 700 unfair labor practice complaints remain unresolved, with union-busting costs exceeding $240 million, the Strategic Organizing Center estimates.
- At 9 a.m., the U-District Starbucks was locked, about 25 union baristas picketed until 11 a.m., and a 4 p.m. rally is scheduled outside the Reserve Roastery.
- Last year, Starbucks made over $3.6 billion in profit and paid nearly $5 billion in buybacks and dividends, while the union claims settling would cost $75 million, less than CEO Brian Niccol's $96 million earnings in four months.
