SpeQtre, the entanglement-based quantum comms demonstrator satellite, is now on orbit
SpeQtre’s commissioning follows its deployment in sun-synchronous orbit to test entanglement-based quantum communications, advancing secure satellite networks and Singapore-UK tech cooperation.
- On Nov. 28, 2025, SpeQtre CubeSat launched on SpaceX's Transporter-15 and was deployed into sun-synchronous orbit, marking a key Singapore–UK bilateral collaboration milestone.
- The mission aims to validate entanglement-based quantum communications from a CubeSat roughly the size of a microwave oven, supported by OSTIn and UKRI, said Andy Vick.
- Following deployment, partners will activate and test spacecraft subsystems and payloads during commissioning over the coming months, with quantum experiments starting early 2026 linking to ground stations in Singapore and Hampshire, UK.
- Data from the SpeQtre experiments will enable secured communications demonstrations and inform future commercial quantum communications satellites, while industry partners SES, Thales Alenia Space, and Hispasat position the mission for commercial follow-on efforts.
- Aligned with international programmes, the mission supports efforts like the European Space Agency's INT-UQKD and Q-DESIGN, responds to urgent needs from advancing quantum computing, and builds on SpeQtral's SpooQy-1 mission heritage.
