‘Snow apocalypse’ hits Russia’s Kamchatka, multi-storey buildings buried in viral video

  • On Monday, powerful winter storms buried towns across the Kamchatka Peninsula, halting transport and shutting schools while at least two residents died in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
  • Meteorologists say the scale of snowfall from low-pressure systems in the Sea of Okhotsk is unprecedented, with December totals triple the average and Jan. 1-16 around 150% more, says Vera Polyakova.
  • Images and videos circulating online show buildings buried up to the fourth floor, with average snow depths reaching 170 centimeters and rescue workers digging through deep drifts.
  • Mayor Yevgeny Belyayev declared a citywide state of emergency to mobilise snow removal after two fatalities and blamed property management companies for delays, while Governor Vladimir Solodov set a Jan. 21 deadline to clear major roads and ordered manual tracking of supplies.
  • With roads still extremely hazardous, road crews and city officials continue clearance while Solodov orders schools in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to reopen amid icicle and avalanche hazards.
