Ukraine Liberated 590 Square Kilometers of Territory This Year, 'Forcing Russia Toward Diplomacy,' Zelensky Says

On Friday, May 22, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine has liberated 590 square kilometers of territory from Russian occupation since the beginning of 2026.
Increasing the rate of Russian personnel destruction combined with comprehensive sanctions is forcing Russia toward diplomacy, which Zelensky noted is now necessary to "do everything to activate diplomacy."
Following a call with French President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is working to secure Europe a seat at the negotiating table.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged on Friday in Helsingborg, Sweden, that peace talks between Ukraine and Russia are "effectively on pause," though the American side remains prepared for productive discussions.
