Kinahan ‘Lieutenant’ Sean McGovern Sentenced to 24 Years in Prison
On Monday, the Special Criminal Court in Dublin sentenced Sean McGovern, a 40-year-old senior lieutenant in the Kinahan Cartel, to 24 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to directing a criminal organization's activities.
McGovern received 10 years for directing activities relating to the planned murder of James Gately and 14 years for his role in the lead-up to the killing of Noel Kirwan, with Justice Patrick McGrath ordering consecutive sentences.
The judge characterized the Kinahan Cartel as a 'particularly large, well-organised sinister and dangerous organisation,' noting McGovern held a 'high degree of trust and competence' among senior members.
Detective Superintendent Dave Gallagher said the sentencing holds to account a key person who 'impacted so negatively on our communities and Ireland,' urging the public to contact the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
Extradited from the United Arab Emirates to face the charges, McGovern's 24-year sentence was backdated to his October 2024 arrest in Dubai, following an earlier hearing where he expressed remorse.
