Samsung unveils first multi-folding phone as competition set to heat up

  • On Dec 2 in Seoul, Samsung Electronics unveiled the Galaxy Z TriFold, its first multi-folding smartphone officially announced as a two-hinged tri-fold model.
  • Facing intense competition from Huawei and other Chinese rivals, Samsung Electronics positioned the TriFold as a 'special edition' and 'not intended for mass sales' to strengthen its foldable lead before Apple enters.
  • Key hardware highlights include a 10-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display , Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy with 16GB RAM, 512GB storage, 200MP main camera, and a 5,600 mAh three-cell battery.
  • The company said the TriFold will go on sale on Dec 12 in South Korea, with launches in China, Taiwan, Singapore , and the United Arab Emirates, priced at about 3.59 million won.
  • Counterpoint Research projects foldable market share will be under 3 per cent in 2025, with analysts forecasting 14 per cent growth that year and near 30 per cent annually in 2026–27.
